THE WINERY

THE ESTATE

The CANTINA MOSPARONE estate was established at the end of 2008 thanks to the passion of its owners, Simonetta Boschetti and Fabrizio Ghebbano, for high quality wines. Set on the hills that divide the municipalities of Castelnuovo don Bosco and Pino d'Asti, the estate covers an area of about 16 hectares, 10 of which are cultivated as vineyards.

THE LAND

The composition of the soils, generally known as “grey-blue marl” or “white soils”, their exposure and an average altitude of around 400 metres above sea level, which offers a good alternation of warm daytime and cool night-time temperatures, as well as meticulous vineyard management, lead to the production of grapes that give life to wines with great structures and elegant bouquets. Right from the start, the aim of the estate has been to be known for the production of high quality wines, linked closely to the local territory and winemaking tradition. After a year spent working in the vineyards under the guide of an agronomical expert specialised in viticulture, in order to improve quality in the vineyard, Cantina Mosparone began vinifying its wines in 2009, under the supervision of the oenologist Mario Ronco.

THE WINES

We use special winemaking containers for the vinification of our red wines, which allow us to pump them over without using mechanical equipment, exploiting the pressure of the carbon dioxide generated naturally during fermentation.

This system is less stressful and prevents damage to the skins and pips, allowing better extraction of colour and softer tannins.

ALBUGNANO SUPERIORE DOC

terroir

The Nebbiolo vines used for the production of our ALBUGNANO are planted in surface soils, like most of the cultivation areas included in the DOC, but they have sub-alkaline reactions and an important structure which are rarely found in other soils in the area. Of all the elements present in the soil, lime from the mother rock below takes up a considerable amount of space. Southerly exposure and the constant, balanced availability of water allow the berries to ripen fully.
Our ALBUGNANO SUPERIORE is made of 100% Nebbiolo and the grapes are selected meticulously among the best produced on the estate.
It matures for 24 months in large French oak barrels (25/30 hectolitres) and at least another 12 months in the bottle before being released for sale.

ALBUGNANO DOC

terroir

For the creation of our ALBUGNANO, we use the fattest, youngest grapes from our vineyards. Compared to its elder brother, ALBUGNANO SUPERIORE, it has more evident perfumes of red berries, a slightly less imposing structure but, nevertheless, a full and round body. It spends a short time – from six to eight months – maturing in barrels with a minimum capacity of 25 hectolitres, before bottling. It rests in the bottle for about six months before being released for sale.

FREISA D'ASTI SUPERIORE DOC

terroir

The grapes used to make our Freisa d’Asti Superiore come from the oldest vineyards on the estate, which are between 40 and 50 years old and are all exposed to the south. The soil contains a large percentage of heavy stone which prevents accumulation and consequent humid microclimates. As the old winemakers knew well, these are the ideal soil and climate for Freisa to fully express its qualities and guarantee the qualitative levels we seek. The low yield due to the age of the vines helps raise the quality and the aromas of the grapes.
Freisa is a close relative of Nebbiolo but has much more evident tannins, making it a wine with excellent potential for long ageing, achieving great smoothness while maintaining both body and bouquet.
Our Freisa d’Asti Superiore matures for 24 months in French oak tonneaux with a capacity of 700 litres, which have been used once or twice before so that the wood does not overpower the aromas of the wine. It is subsequently left to rest in the bottle for 12 months before being released for sale.

BARBERA D'ASTI DOC

terroir

The grapes used to make Barbera d’Asti come from vineyards which enjoy south-easterly exposure and give us grapes with a lower sugar content and higher acidity than those used to make our Barbera d’Asti Superiore.
This is a fresher, slightly lively (not bubbly or sparkling) wine, to be drunk young, with all courses of a meal.

PIEMONTE DOC SAUVIGNON

terroir

The grapes are grown on a very consistent slope, where the typical surfacing of substratum and sudden changes in depth are interrupted. South-easterly exposure, “middle-hill” positioning and the fact that the area is naturally protected from cold currents allow the specialisation of cultivation year after year, thanks to comparison of the results achieved. The soil if “sandy-silty-loam”, with a high content of active limestone and a sub-alkaline reaction. There is a very high calcium content. The orographic position, exposure and controlled grass coverage of the space between the rows of vines make the nutritional elements required by the vines available at all times. This protects the vines as much as possible against the physiological stress caused by sudden climatic changes.

NA FRISA

terroir

Originally created as a medicinal product, “Vino Chinato” soon became an excellent wine for drinking in company at the end of a meal and for offering to highly-esteemed guests.
Enjoyed also by ladies, thanks to its lower alcohol content (compared to other spirits), it was subsequently forgotten as fashions changed.
Today it has regained success as a dessert wine which, thanks to the pleasant bitter-sweet contrast, is delightful with dried pastries and especially with very dark chocolate.
Our Vino Chinato is made using our Freisa which has reached the end of its ageing period, to enhance the bottom notes of our base wine, to which we add infusions and extracts of various herbs, including china calissaja bark, rhubarb, gentian and bitter orange.

TECHNICAL DATASHEET

BARBERA D'ASTI SUPERIORE

terroir

Our Barbera d’Asti grapes are cultivated in an area characterised by thin soils with a cultivation depth of 30-40 cm. They are silt loam soils with high values of total and active limestone.
The ripening of the grapes in the production area of this wine is influenced more than in other areas by the variability of the climate, so much so that prompt and targeted attentions are required. In these vineyards, permanent wild grass coverage has been allowed and this coverage has now achieved a competitive balance with the roots of the vines. Correctly interpreting the meteorological and climatic events of the single years as they occur, it is possible to obtain a product with outstanding quality and personality. Although the wine is enjoyable after just six months in the bottle, it reaches its finest expression after 2-3 years, ageing for up to 10 years, thanks to its great structure and alcohol content.
